London Property Alliance letter to the Chancellor: a tax on businesses is a tax on jobs

26 Oct 2026

Ahead of the 2026 Budget, London Property Alliance Chief Executive, Charles Begley, has written to the Chancellor, John Healey MP, to express concerns over reports that the Government is considering increasing business rates on higher-value commercial properties.

In the letter, he argues that economic growth cannot be achieved by placing a further tax on businesses, which are already absorbing higher energy, labour and borrowing costs, alongside increasing regulatory burdens.

Offices are not simply property assets – The Alliance calls on the Government to recognise the commercial property sector as critical economic infrastructure where businesses innovate, collaborate and grow:

“Office-based sectors support approximately 2.8 million jobs across London and generate almost £290 billion in economic output each year. Every 100 office jobs support a further 40 jobs through supply chains and 18 on local high streets. Increasing costs for major employers therefore affects jobs and economic activity across entire business ecosystems.“
