Diversifying Real Estate Guidebook: Gender

Download

This guidebook is part of a series of seven themed diversity booklets, commissioned by CPA and WPA NextGen, produced by London Property Alliance, and supported by NextGen champion, Gardiner & Theobald

Additional guides in the series focus on race, disability, sexuality, social mobility, faith & religion and intersectionality.

The original edition of this guide was published in March 2021, it was then updated in January 2026.

Real Estate Balance research shows UK real estate is close to gender-balance at early career stages but representation drops noticeably at middle management and becomes more pronounced at the top.

This guidebook addresses the key barriers to how workplaces in the property industry can be more inclusive – and better support women through recruitment, retention and career progression. It suggests simple ways for organisations and individuals to implement positive change, featuring best practice examples and signposting to resources.

This guidebook is produced in partnership with Real Estate Balance.

In her foreword, Sue Brown, Managing Director of Real Estate Balance, writes:

Gender equality is not just a matter of social justice; it is essential to attracting, developing and retaining the best talent in a sector undergoing rapid transformation. As the built environment responds to technological innovation, evolving societal expectations and the pressures of a housing crisis, our success depends on workplaces where the very best men and women can contribute and lead.”
